The Avengers? Ethan Hunt’s team from Mission: Impossible? The heroes of the DC Universe? Batman and his allies? No. These aren’t fictional characters—they’re real human beings with no superpowers whatsoever, sailing for change and setting an example for the rest of the world. Affirming through their actions that we are here, we are listening and we will not give up.
On June 1st 2025, 12 heroes set aboard on a mission departing from Sicily, Italy, embarking on a brave journey that will mark its territory in history books. These 12 individuals are currently on a ship called Madleen, named after Gaza’s first and only fisherwoman. Organized by Flotilla Coalition {FFC}, this is their second attempt. The first boat was bombed twice. The Madleen carries humanitarian aid, things like baby formula, rice, flour, diapers, hygiene products, water purification kits, medical equipment, including prosthetics for children. All of the basic necessities that have been blocked by Israel since March 2nd resulting in deaths of dozens of children due to starvation. That's it. That is the sole purpose of this mission. To serve humanity at its most basic level.
The crew of 12 includes nationalities from around the world, Ireland, Turkiye, Spain, France, Germany, Sweden, Netherlands, and Brazil. Including activist Greta Thunberg, Game of Thrones actor, Liam Cunningham aka, Ser Davos of Seaworth and French member of the European Parliament {MEP}, Rima Hassan. It is a journey of 2,000 km {1,250 miles) and is expected to take seven days which would be the 7th of June {providing there are no interuptions}. The ship’s location is being monitored live by Forensic Architecture, using the live tracker on board. Speaking of interruptions, on June 4th a drone was seen hovering over the Madleen, the FFC account on X announced that after a while, it left. Along with Republican Senator Lindsey Graham mocking the mission on social media with a veiled threat, writing on X: “I hope Greta and her friends can swim!”
The FFC has further emphasised on their official X account that all volunteers and crew members on board are trained in nonviolence and are sailing unarmed in a peaceful act of civil resistance. The fact that this needed to be an official statement says a lot about the state of the world currently. A ship carrying baby formula and children’s prosthetics needs to declare, “No we are not violent, please let us through.”
We are doing this because no matter what odds we are against, we have to keep trying, because the moment we stop trying is when we lose our humanity and no matter how dangerous this mission is, it is nowehere near as dangerous as the silence of the entire world in the face of a live-streamed genocide - Greta Thunberg
Ser Davo- I mean, Liam Cunningham was asked before beginning this journey on how he feels, he replied, “Very nervous. About the IDF and the Tel Aviv regime will do once this boat arrives”
In a statement after he continued, “We are doing what the rest of the world should be doing including the EU {European Union}, but they are not and their time will come.”
Our job as human beings is to continue to monitor their journey and support them as much as possible using social media. This is their shield, their form of protection. They may not have superpowers but to us they are superheroes wearing keffiyehs as capes and we applaud their act of resistance.
May God grant them safety, steadfastness and victory in their purpose. Ameen.
